SARAH NICKEL

August 11, 1929 - January 30, 2026

Sarah was born August 11, 1929 in Rosengart, Manitoba and passed away January 30, 2026. She was the oldest of 10 children born to Johann and Sara Braun. She is survived by 3 siblings: Nettie Heide and Hank and Ike Braun. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Nickel on August 23, 2001; her parents, brothers; Ernest, Jacob, John and Peter; sisters: Helen and Anne.

Sarah spent her childhood on the family farm at Rosengart. Sarah was the oldest and so she learned to work very hard. This was her lifelong trademark.

Sarah met her husband Henry in 1952 and they married on March 29, 1953. In their beginnings their search for employment resulted in many moves. They finally settled in Brandon where Henry worked at MTS and later started his own electrical business called Nickel Electric.

They had six children. Alan (Ruth), Rose (Garry), Doreen (Rudy), Ernie (Monica), Mel, Len (Karen).

They had 11 grandchildren. They are Andrea, Tim and Eric, Michaela, Sara and Amanda, Thomas, Natalie, and Tyler, Kristina and Colin. Many of these have found spouses and have added great-grandchildren.

Sarah fit the description of a virtuous woman. Hospitality was her gift. She loved to garden, cook and bake. She often invited extra guests for Sunday lunch for her famous honey chicken. Everyone loved her freshly baked buns. She had a big heart and loved her family and others easily. She worked together with Henry in the Nickel Electric business. She volunteered at the MCC store and Helping Hands. There were many quilts and noodles made and donated to the MCC sale. She was a strong woman and was noted to have feisty comments to anyone who would banter with her.

She was a woman of faith and attended church regularly. This is how she raised her family as well. More recently she often asked to pray with people and she would make up little spiritual songs that expressed her faith in God.

For the last 6 years, Sarah lived at Dinsdale Personal Care Home. She loved her time there, especially the spiritual care times that the Salvation Army home offered. The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff for their patience and kindness.

The funeral will take place at Grace Mennonite Church on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, 2:00 p.m. Interment will be prior to the service.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Condolences to the family. I am one of the 14 of Peter & Helena Rempel (mother was a brother to John Braun sr.) I remember staying holidays at Brauns in Reinland, playing with Ike. Sara was a grown up & was always kind & gentle. She was someone we looked up to.. I remember she had the distinctive Braun chuckle. I liked her. She was friendly then and reading the obit, I could envision her being in her element by the many things and ways you describe her.. she was a gifted treasure to those in her life.
